Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

Essential hypertension

Mild to moderate essential hypertension is largely asymptomatic. The most frequent symptom is headache, which  is also very nonspecific. Severe malignant hypertension is associated with somnolence, confusion, visual disturbances, and nausea and vomiting (hypertensive encephalopathy).  Malignant hypertension is a severe life threatening condition and the patient must be admitted to hospital for treatment immediately. Where the hypertension is secondary, signs and symptoms of underlying causes may be present.
